Fros come in all shapes, sizes, colors, textures and patterns as I’m sure many of you have noticed. FroFriday shout outs allow us to connect with naturals from everywhere rocking their bold manes with pride.
Our very first Fro Friday Natural Influencer Participant is none other than 2014 Claflin University graduate Courtney McClain.
Courtney’s “voluminous fro-baby” is the definition of hair goals! Her fro immediately caught my attention when she was tagged for a shoutout last week because it was so regal. Literally a crown atop her head. Her go to hair style are twists outs and I must admit I am a tad bit jealous that my twist outs are not as defined as hers. As of This past Tuesday Courtney has been natural for 2 years, 1 month, and 2 days.

(Question) Why did you choose to revert back to a natural hair state?
(Courtney) My hair has been relaxed since the age of 6. I had a head full of thick, coarse, sandy red hair as my mom LOVES to describe it that she was incapable of taming daily. My mom has also controlled my hair and I that was seriously the only way I could rebel. I secretly started transitioning for 6 months then I cut the remaining relaxed off into a tapered cut. It made me feel like an independent adult at the time but I eventually cried my head off.
Q.What do you love most about your hair?
C. The thickness and it’s ability to quickly conform into styles with superb definition.
Q. What inspires you the most, doesn’t have to be hair related?
C. My family and my friends, the ones who are successful and unsuccessful. Everyone teaches me something useful that I can apply to my short term and long term goals.
Q. Go to hair product or most used hair product?
C. Shea Moisture’s Intensive Hydration Shampoo and Condition with Cantu Curl Cream
Q. Where you natural as a student? Yes
Describe your experience.
C. I did my big chop doing my first year of graduate school. The first couple of months, no one knew because I immediatedly put braids in my hair. Afterwards, everyone was surprised. I think reception was better because I attended an HBCU.
Q. Have you faced any difficulties in the workplace as a natural?
C. No, however being in healthcare, makes me feel as if my hair should be controlled.
Q. Any positives (so far as the work place)?
C. Yes, people love to see hairstyles they’re not used to seeing.
Although she is reluctant to provide hair care tips it is clear that she puts in the right amount of THLC (Tender Hair Loving Care) into her hair routine. Thanks for your participation in our FroFriday shout outs and for taking the time to answer some questions for our readers girl!
