About Me

Every woman should feel courageous and magnificent in their own skin. I strive to promote self love and appreciation through inspiration. My name is Rei, I am the founder/creator of the natural blog diary ThatGalRei. As a child I was teased not only in school by kids but also by family members for having kinky hair. For a long time I had little to no self esteem that caused me to question my own beauty. I tried fitting in by begging my aunt to let me relax my hair hoping that my new look would lift my spirits. When I was 14 I was allowed to relax my hair for the first time. It was a very strange and stinky process. I immediately doubted the decision but it would take me another 3 years to start blossoming and come to terms with my individuality. I relaxed my hair for the last time in June of 2011 for my brothers wedding.I transitioned for a year and a half by maintaining a bob cut until all of my relaxed ends were gone. It took a lot of self motivation, reflection, prayer to build up a strong back to start my  natural hair journey. I am proud to say that I have been natural now for 5 years which I celebrate every July in some way, shape, or form.  I don’t care who you are or where you come from you are beautiful. Not everyone is able to accept their individuality at an early age but, despite this fact, I believe that we each possess the ability to discover it. Sometimes that discovery comes in the form of someone inspirational in your life,  a life changing event, or even something that you are deeply passionate about.  Falling in love with my hair and therefore myself is my way of accepting myself so that I can inspire others to do the same. Sister child it does not matter if your texture is is kinky, coily, curly or loc’d; It does not matter  whether you prefer keeping it blown out or tucked away under weaves, braids or twist because it is your hair. Your hair is apart of you and therefore it is a direct reflection of your uniqueness. I started blogging because it is my mission to encourage women, particularly women of color to embrace their uniqueness  but more to importantly love themselves. I hope that as you journey with me along my ever winding natural hair journey you will find your own bit of uniqueness that will light the fire inside of you.
